- Description
- Set in London and Paris around the French Revolution, *A Tale of Two Cities* follows a family caught up in the violence. Dr. Alexandre Manette is freed after 18 years unjustly imprisoned in the Bastille and reunites with his daughter, Lucie, in London. Lucie marries Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat who has given up his cruel family's name and wealth. Sydney Carton, a brilliant but dissolute English lawyer who looks strikingly like Darnay, also loves Lucie, and he promises to do anything for her and those she loves. When the Revolution erupts, Darnay returns to Paris to help a former servant and is arrested for his family's crimes. Madame Defarge, a revolutionary seeking revenge on his family, helps ensure he is sentenced to the guillotine. Carton slips into the prison, swaps places with Darnay and dies in his place, while Lucie's family escapes to England. His sacrifice redeems his wasted life, and he goes to his death thinking: "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done."
