Description
"Badshahat Ka Khatma" (The End of a Kingdom) is a poignant short story by Saadat Hasan Manto that explores urban isolation, loneliness, and the fragile nature of human dreams. The narrative follows Manmohan, an unemployed and homeless young man living on the streets of Bombay, whose life temporarily changes when a friend leaves him in charge of a vacant office. Finding shelter and access to a telephone, Manmohan experiences a fleeting sense of power and status, feeling like a king ruling over his own small, comfortable domain—his "badshahat." The core of the story unfolds when Manmohan answers a wrong-number phone call from an unknown woman and begins speaking with her regularly. He falls deeply in love with her voice but deliberately avoids asking for her name or face to preserve the pure, romantic illusion of his fantasy world. However, his kingdom inevitably crumbles when he learns his friend is returning, forcing him back to reality. In a tragic twist of irony, the woman offers her real identity and number during their final conversation, just as Manmohan is evicted and his fragile dream world completely shatters.
